Sag Harbor: The Hamptons' Historic Village
Sag Harbor was one of the world's major whaling ports in the 1800s, rivaling Nantucket and New Bedford at its peak. The Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum on Main Street preserves this heritage in a grand building topped by a whale jaw bone arch. Walking the same streets that 19th-century sea captains once called home gives the village a sense of history you won't find anywhere else in the Hamptons.

Unlike much of the Hamptons, Sag Harbor feels like a self-contained village rather than a beach resort. The American Hotel, built in 1846, is one of the most storied hotels on the East Coast. Its legendary wine cellar and intimate bar have hosted writers, artists, and politicians for generations.
