Traffic reality: Sunday evening westbound traffic from the Hamptons is notorious, and starting from Montauk means a longer journey through it. If leaving on a summer Sunday evening, plan for 3.5 to 4.5 hours. To avoid the worst, leave before noon or after 8pm.
