The drive from LaGuardia Airport to Montauk covers roughly 115 miles and takes 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes under normal traffic conditions. Montauk sits at the very tip of Long Island's South Fork, about 20 miles past East Hampton. It's the longest drive to any Hamptons destination, but the extra distance means fewer crowds and a more rugged, natural beauty.
From LaGuardia, your driver takes the Grand Central Parkway east to the Long Island Expressway (I-495). From there, you connect to Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and continue all the way through Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, and Amagansett before reaching Montauk. The final stretch passes through Hither Hills State Park with ocean views on both sides.
Traffic reality: Friday afternoons from Memorial Day through Labor Day are congested. If your flight lands after 2pm on a Friday during summer, expect the drive to take closer to 4 to 4.5 hours. Our drivers monitor real-time traffic and use alternate routes through Montauk Highway or back roads when the main highways are jammed.
This is the longest LGA route we run, at roughly 115 miles to the tip of Long Island. Uber drivers almost never accept a trip this long from LaGuardia. The ones who do often cancel partway through the request when they realize the destination. Even if you get matched, surge pricing on a summer Friday can push the cost well past what a dedicated car service charges at a flat rate.

At 115 miles, timing matters even more on this route. The first bottleneck is the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge crossing out of Queens. The second is eastbound traffic on Route 27 through the Hamptons, which builds heavily on summer Fridays from 2pm onward. Since you are driving all the way past East Hampton and Amagansett to reach Montauk, you sit in that traffic longer than anyone.
The best strategy for this route is an early morning or late evening arrival at LGA. Flights landing before 10am or after 7pm avoid both bridge congestion and Hamptons traffic. If a midday arrival is unavoidable, our drivers use the Throgs Neck (typically less congested than the Whitestone) and shift between the Southern State and Sunrise Highway based on conditions. LGA's construction can add 10-15 minutes to the pickup process during peak hours, and we account for that.
If you have a choice between LaGuardia and JFK for your flight to Montauk, here's what to consider:
JFK is about 30 minutes closer to Montauk when traffic is clear. If you're arriving on a Friday summer afternoon, however, the JFK area traffic can eliminate that advantage. Choose based on flight availability rather than ground transfer.
Montauk offers a different Hamptons experience. Less manicured than Southampton or East Hampton, Montauk has a rugged, natural beauty that attracts surfers, fishermen, and those who prefer understated luxury to see-and-be-seen scenes. The town sits at the very tip of Long Island, surrounded by ocean on three sides, with state parks and nature preserves protecting much of the coastline.
Ditch Plains Beach is the surf capital of the Hamptons. Consistent waves and a laid-back vibe draw surfers from across the Northeast. Even non-surfers enjoy the beach's wild energy. Gurney's Montauk Resort sits right on the sand, offering spa services and oceanfront dining.
Montauk Harbor is home to one of the largest commercial and sport fishing fleets on the East Coast. Charter a boat for striped bass, tuna, or shark fishing. The harbor restaurants serve some of the freshest seafood in New York.
The Montauk Point Lighthouse, authorized by George Washington in 1792 and completed in 1796, marks the easternmost point of New York State. Hither Hills State Park offers camping and hiking trails with ocean views. For many visitors, the extra drive from LGA is what makes Montauk special: you feel like you have truly left the city behind.
