Montauk sits at the very tip of Long Island's South Fork, approximately 110 miles from JFK Airport. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours under normal traffic conditions. You'll pass through the heart of the Hamptons on Route 27 (Montauk Highway), continuing past East Hampton and Amagansett until the road ends where the land meets the Atlantic.
The route heads east on the Belt Parkway, transitions to the Southern State Parkway, and connects to Route 27. Once you're past Southampton, traffic typically thins out. The final stretch from Amagansett to Montauk is often the smoothest part of the journey.
Traffic reality: Friday afternoons from Memorial Day through Labor Day can be brutal on the western section of Route 27. If your flight lands after 2pm on a Friday during summer, expect the drive to approach 3.5-4 hours. Our drivers monitor real-time traffic and use alternate routes when possible.
At 110 miles, Montauk is the longest ride from JFK of any Hamptons destination. That distance creates a near-guarantee of problems with rideshare. Uber drivers frequently cancel Montauk trips outright because the 3-hour drive means they lose their entire shift on a single fare. Many will not even accept the request. The drivers who do accept may not know the route past East Hampton, and the app offers no recourse if they cancel 20 minutes into the trip.

Montauk is the furthest destination from JFK, so timing your travel is especially important. The Route 27 corridor through Southampton, Bridgehampton, and East Hampton is where most traffic builds up. Once past Amagansett, the road opens up for the final scenic stretch into Montauk.
Best arrival windows: Weekday flights or Saturday morning arrivals give you the smoothest ride. If you can land at JFK before noon on any day, you will likely complete the drive in under three hours. Evening arrivals (after 7pm) also work well, as eastbound traffic clears by then.
Holiday weekends: Montauk has become one of the most popular holiday destinations on the East End. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends bring extreme traffic. For these weekends, fly in on Thursday if at all possible. A Friday afternoon arrival can push your drive to 3.5 or even 4 hours.
September and October: Montauk's fall season is a well-kept secret. Fishing remains excellent, the beaches empty out, and the surf picks up. The drive from JFK in fall is consistently under 2.5 hours.
Montauk is different from the rest of the Hamptons. Where Southampton and East Hampton offer refined village atmospheres and estate culture, Montauk delivers a laid-back surf town vibe. It is the end of the road, literally, and that isolation creates something special.
Surfing at Ditch Plains: The most consistent surf break in the Hamptons. Bring your board or rent one in town.
World-class fishing: Montauk Harbor is the sport fishing capital of the Northeast. Charter boats run daily for striped bass, tuna, and shark.
The dining scene punches well above its weight for a town this size. Harvest on Fort Pond offers farm-to-table dining with water views. The Crow's Nest on Lake Montauk is a sunset institution. For something more casual, Duryea's Lobster Deck right on the harbor serves some of the freshest seafood on the East End.
Montauk Point Lighthouse, authorized by President George Washington in 1792 and completed in 1796, stands at the easternmost point of New York State. Hither Hills State Park offers some of the best camping on Long Island. And for those who simply want to relax, Gurney's Resort and Spa sits right on the ocean with its famous seawater pool.
The drive from JFK Airport to Montauk typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Friday afternoons in summer can extend this to 3.5-4 hours. Montauk is the furthest point on Long Island's South Fork, approximately 110 miles from JFK.
